Michigan Democrats Gather For Issues Convention

LANSING (AP) - U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow is kicking off Michigan Democrats' fall issues convention.

The daylong "Engage Michigan" convention takes place Saturday at the Lansing Center.

The forum will give Democratic activists a chance to discuss the party's goals for creating jobs and improving education, as well as other issues.

It's being held as Stabenow's re-election run and the presidential contest are heating up heading into 2012.

Over the past week, a Republican House member was recalled over his votes to cut school funding and a Republican presidential debate at Oakland University drew heavy criticism from Democrats over GOP candidates' opposition to the federal auto bailout.

The meeting will wrap up with a call to action from Michigan AFL-CIO President Karla Swift and the Rev. Wendell Anthony and evening receptions.
