Mich. Woman Convicted In Newborn Baby's Death
A Wayne County jury has convicted Emily Portellos of second-degree murder and child abuse in the October 2008 death of her newborn daughter.
The 30-year old Portellos, of Plymouth Township, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison at her sentencing later this month. The jury deliberated over eleven hours before reaching a verdict.
Prosecutors argued that Portellos kept her pregnancy secret and smothered the baby in order to avoid the embarrassment of being an unwed mother.
