Mich. Universities See Out-Of-State Student Gains

Efforts to recruit students from around the country and overseas to Michigan universities are leading to sizable gains in nonresident enrollments for some between 2000 and 2009.

The Detroit Free Press reports today that such students are being recruited as Michigan's population of high school graduates dwindles. Schools are reaching out to students in distant states through college fairs and connecting with high school counselors. Some such as Central Michigan University are advertising out of state.

At Michigan Technological University, nonresident numbers surged 168 percent between 2004 and 2009. And the University of Michigan-Flint is expected to see an increase of more than 40 percent in international students this academic year.
