Police Arrest Man For Shooting At Cars
PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP (AP) - A trench-coat wearing man accused of firing shots at motorists along a Michigan highway was arrested early Wednesday morning, and police said overnight snowfall helped in the investigation.
Authorities in Pittsfield Township, near Ann Arbor, said they weren't sure why the 28-year-old shot at multiple cars along US-23. No one was injured in the shootings and no charges have been filed.
Police said the man acted alone.
Motorists started calling 911 shortly after midnight, and officers, already out assisting with weather-related issues, scrambled to the scene near Michigan Avenue. Police found the suspect walking in the area and took him into custody at gunpoint. They tracked his footprints in the snow and found a sawed-off shotgun about 150 feet away from where he was arrested.
"It's not often that we have inclement weather help us out," Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick told AnnArbor.com.
The suspect listed an Ypsilanti address with the arresting officers, but also said he was from Wisconsin, Schick said. Authorities have not released the suspect's name.
The man was being held at the Washtenaw County jail, pending a review of possible charges, which Schick said would likely come on Thursday.
While the snowy conditions assisted law enforcement, Schick said they could have worked against the motorists in the gunman's sights.
"I'm not sure of the speeds (on the highway) last night," the deputy chief said. "He may have had some slow targets, so we're very fortunate that no one was hurt."
Wednesday's incident had no connection to a series of roadway shootings that targeted motorists along the Interstate 96 corridor in four Michigan counties last fall, Schick said.
