Mich. Plants Seedlings To Restore Burned Forests
LANSING (AP) - Michigan has planted more than 7 million seedlings on state forest land this spring to reforest land and protect wildlife.
Michigan's Department of Natural Resources said Thursday that it reforested about 7,500 acres in April and May.
One of the reforestation projects included replanting the area destroyed by the Duck Lake wildfire in the Upper Peninsula's Luce County. The Duck Lake wildfire was caused by a lightning strike last May. It destroyed 21,069 acres, 136 structures and temporarily closed Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
The state says with help from the Arbor Day Foundation it was able to plant about 1.3 million jack pine seedlings to begin the restoration process.
The foundation's donations also went toward planting seedlings in Montmorency and Crawford counties on the Mackinaw and Au Sable state forests.
