Mich. Fugitive Wanted For Murders Arrested In Vegas
SAGINAW (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan man sought in the drive-by shooting death of a 6-year-old girl and the slaying of his ex-girlfriend has been arrested in Las Vegas by an FBI-led police task force.
The FBI said 24-year-old Michael Duane Lawrence was captured Friday.
Records show Lawrence is being held at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas on a fugitive warrant pending an extradition hearing on Tuesday before a Nevada judge.
Police in Saginaw have been searching for Lawrence since a 20-count homicide warrant for his arrest was issued by the prosecutor's office on September 3, 2012. The office charged Lawrence with murder in connection with the Aug. 2012 shooting death of 6-year-old Layla Jones. He's one of three people charged in Jones' death.
Police have also alleged that Lawrence killed 23-year-old ex-girlfriend Angelica C. Olivarez in April of this year. According to police, Olivarez's body was discovered after her 3-year-old son was found wandering the streets near their home.
The Saginaw Police Department, which investigated the homicide cases, sought the assistance of the FBI when officers determined that Lawrence likely had fled Michigan.
