Mich. Family Finds Black Widow Spider In Grapes From Walmart
CHATHAM (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan family found a black widow spider inside a bag of grapes bought at a Walmart store.
Gloria Johnson said the spider crawled out of the bag after her mother washed the grapes in the sink.
The 11-year-old from the Upper Peninsula community of Chatham told WLUC-TV she knew the spider was dangerous because of its tell-tale markings.
"We went and looked at it and it had the red hourglass on the bottom of the spider and after that we put it in a jar of alcohol and we killed it," she said.
Gloria says her 3-year-old sister already had eaten some of the black seedless grapes before they noticed the spider. She wasn't hurt.
Johnson's mother said she bought the grapes from a Walmart location in Marquette on Nov. 19.
Walmart apologized to the Johnson family in a written statement, saying its "Marquette branch has looked through the other merchandise in the store and did not find any other spiders."
