MGM Grand Detroit Employees Ratify 4-Year Contract
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit's MGM Grand Casino and union workers have finally reached an agreement after weeks of negotiations.
Shawn Ellis, spokesman for Teamsters Local 372 (one of the unions involved), said they approved the pact by about a 3-to-1 margin.
"By a 73 percent yes vote, there is a new four-year agreement between the Detroit Casino Council and MGM Grand Casino Detroit," said Ellis.
Last week, workers "overwhelmingly rejected" the offer at the MGM Grand Casino, even after employees at MotorCity and Greektown casinos approved labor agreements.
"Concerns that were voiced in last week's rejection were brought to the table earlier this week during mediated talks and the result of those mediated talks were presented to the membership and the vote tallied with a 73 percent yes vote," said Ellis.
The deal at MGM includes signing bonuses of up to $4,000. Monthly health care premium payments are expected to increase under the new contract.
The Detroit Casino Council is composed of the Teamsters, the UAW, Operating Engineers and Unite Here.
