Metro Detroit Man Killed In Dispute Over Dog When Marine Vet Opens Fire
WALLED LAKE (WWJ) - Police say a neighborly dispute over a loose dog turned deadly when one man pulled out a gun and started shooting the other.
The incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in the 1100 block of Sigma, in a neighborhood near Pontiac Trail and West Maple Road in Walled Lake.
Two men were reportedly arguing over a dog getting out of his owner's yard and into the neighbor's yard. At some point during the argument, one man, a 28-year-old Marine Corps veteran, apparently shot the other man, a 45-year-old.
Denise Williams, who lives in the area, said she watched the whole thing unfold.
"I had heard what I thought was a gunshot and then went about my business. Then, I was looking out the window and there was probably six or eight police officers with guns drawn with a scope, and they had a gentleman laying right here, in the middle of the road, handcuffed," she said.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where he later died. The gunman is in police custody. Names of those involved weren't immediately released.
Police Chief Paul Shakinas told WWJ's Mike Campbell that neighbors have complained about the man's dogs in the past.
"We have had contact with the suspect recently, I can say that," Shakinas said, declining to elaborate.
Charges in the case could come as soon as Wednesday.
"I've been in touch with the prosecutor's office, but don't want to release too many details. I want to give them an opportunity, and to also let the detectives finish up their investigation and get that up to the prosecutor's office in a timely manner," Shakinas said.
The incident remains under investigation.
