Children and adults across Metro Detroit, Michigan and the world were up early Saturday morning opening gifts on this Christmas 2010.
Toys, computers and other tech gadgets were popular presents along with clothing.
While retailers were reporting higher sales this year, another rush of shoppers is expected Sunday when stores reopen. "After Christmas Blitz" read the Kohl's ad. The store is to open at 5 a.m. JC Penney is holding a "Doorbusters" sale while Macy's was to begin its "After Christmas Sale" at 7 a.m. Sunday.
Many churches were expected to be a little more crowded for masses.
Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron was to deliver a message of hope this weekend.
"We need to all turn to god and find from him the strength to perservere in our challenges and then also to find the strength to meet our challenges," Vigneron told WWJ earlier in the week.
Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates Jesus' birth.
While most people have the day off, many police officers, firefighters and hospital workers will be celebrating Christmas at work. And volunteers will be spreading cheer to those less fortunate.
Coaches and players from the University of Toledo and Florida International University will help serve breakfast at the Masonic Temple to those in need.
Muslim volunteers will be gathering at Neighborhood City Hall in southwest Detroit to provide meals for seniors and toys to needy neighborhood kids.
