SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Melky Cabrera will receive his World Series ring this week when the San Francisco Giants make a two-game interleague stop in Toronto to face his Blue Jays.
San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday he intends to speak with Cabrera and thank him for his contributions to the reigning World Series champions. Cabrera was suspended for 50 games last Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone test.
"I'm appreciative of him being here and playing hard every day," Bochy said Sunday. "What's happened, happened. That's behind us. I do know he's a good person, he is, and he was a good teammate. I will thank him for that."
Bochy will present Cabrera with his sparkly Tiffany & Co. ring, probably before the series opener Tuesday night.
Cabrera was the MVP of last year's All-Star game. He was batting an NL-leading .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs over 113 games in his first season with San Francisco when he was suspended. He asked MLB for a rules change that disqualified him from the batting title, saying it would be a tainted achievement.
Though he was eligible to play, Cabrera was left off the postseason roster — a decision made in late September before the playoffs began. The slugger's ban ended with the completion of a division series victory against Cincinnati.
For the Giants, this will be their first face-to-face meeting with Cabrera since last August. Many players haven't even spoken to him despite efforts to get in touch.
Bochy, for one, insists there are no hard feelings now that everybody has moved forward. And the Giants did fine without Cabrera, sweeping the Detroit Tigers in four games last fall to capture a second championship in three years.
In November, Cabrera signed a $16 million, two-year deal with Toronto.
"I'll see him," Bochy said. "I'll talk to him."
