MDOT: Metro Region Is Ready For Winter Weather
DETROIT (WWJ) - The salt sheds are loaded, the plows are tuned up, and crews are ready for the first accumulating snowfall of the year, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The Metro Region winter maintenance budget for this fiscal year is $12.8 million. More than 160,000 tons of salt have been purchased by contract counties at an average cost of $47.40 per ton.
The following is a breakdown for salt purchases in each county MDOT's Metro Region serves:
- Wayne County: 69,400 tons at $46.09/ton
- Oakland County: 35,979 tons at $46.51/ton
- Macomb County: 45,000 tons at $47.48/ton
- St. Clair County: 10,505 tons at $49.53/ton
Statewide, the total winter maintenance budget is approximately $91 million. Over 526,000 tons of salt have been purchased at an average price of $57.62 per ton. Contingency plans are in place to purchase late season salt if necessary.
During winter weather events, MDOT reminds motorists to accelerate or brake slowly, slow down when visibility is reduced, maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, and don't crowd the plow.
