Mazda Pulls Out Of Flat Rock Michigan Plant
FLAT ROCK (WWJ/AP) - Mazda says it will stop building the midsize Mazda 6 at its only U.S. factory in Flat Rock, Michigan. The company says that it made the decision because of changing demand in North America and currency exchange rates.
The Flat Rock plant also builds the Ford Mustang, but is that production enough to keep it open? WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Ford spokesperson Marcey Evans.
"That's not something I would be able to talk about today. It's really too early for us to talk about what the future may hold," Evans said.
"Ford is currently working with Mazda and the UAW to study options for the plant after Mazda 6 production is moved. It's too early for us to be more specific about that options may be, or to speculate about possible outcomes," she said.
The sprawling Flat Rock facility currently employs 1,700 workers.
