Mayors From Across The Country Convene In Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (WWJ) - Mayors from across the nation are spending their weekend in Las Vegas to talk about challenges facing their communities -- as well as solutions to those problems.
More than 200 mayors are at this year's United States Conference of Mayors, including Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett.
He says the group discusses problems such as trash pickup and filling potholes -- as well as bigger issues.
"One of the larger ones is the changes being proposed to the tax exemption status for municipal bonds," said Barnett. "That alone could have over a million dollar impact on our community ... so we are talking with other mayors and putting strategies together on how we approach Congress and talk about the value of that program to our community and our city."
"You've got the same issue of residents that are frustrated with government, try to prioritize spending, you have the issues of trying to do more with less," Barnett told WWJ Newsradio.
"And that where I think a meeting like this is great because you are dealing with the CEOs of other communities, mayors from other communities - many of them with 30 years of experience."
Also at the event, the mayors of Westland, Southfield, and East Lansing.
