Mayor Bing To Emcee Snyder Inauguration
In a show of bipartisan support, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing will serve as the master of ceremonies during Governor-elect Rick Snyder's inauguration ceremony January 1st.
WWJ's Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says this is something that Snyder really wanted.
"This is great symbolism. This is the kind of message that he wanted to send on the campaign trail and did, by goung to out-state Michigan and saying Detroit is important. And how to focus that and put a light on it by asking the Mayor of Detroit to basically anchor ceremonies at the state capital. It absolutely doesn't get any better than that," Skubick said.
"Mr. Snyder has said that he wants to be a partner with Detroit, and I think the feeling is mutual. It's easy, howerver, not to throw any coal on this thing, but it's easy to talk about being a partner as were are here in the honeymoon period.
Skubick says that at some point, however, Mayor Bing will be asking the new Governoer for funding, "and then we'll see if they will dance or not."
Other highlights of the inauguration ceremony include nineteen- annon salute and music by the Michigan Army National Guard.
The ceremony takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Lansing, and is open to the public and free to attend. Free parking will be available at multiple locations surrounding the Capitol.
Following the swearing in, Governor Snyder will then greet residents in a receiving line from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. In the evening, the governor will attend the inaugural celebration at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts on Michigan State University's campus in East Lansing.
