Matt's Favorites: LTU Event Talks Energy, iPhone Coming, And Much More
So what's the latest and greatest in the wild and woolly world of high tech? Check out these gems:
* First of all, here are the links to your Tech Report home page, the Tech Report Page Two(home of much fascinatin' news), as well as our latest event notices, HR notices and listings of tech-related awards and certifications.
* And I hope you're already signed up for Thursday's "The Business of Energy" event at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, the first of our annual series of Thursday event at LTU. I'll be moderating an expert panel on how to save green by going green at your commercial, industrial or residential building -- and what the opportunities are for future entrepreneurs. Sign up at www.cbsdetroit.com/techevents, and here's a clip of me talking about the event on Fox 2 Detroit's evening news.
* It's that time again: Apple's holding a special event Tuesday. Here's what we expect to see, along with a list of things we don't.
* NASA's Curiosity rover has caught some very cool pictures of a solar eclipse on Mars.
* Facebook spent $1 billion to acquire Instagram in 2012 and is apparently ready to see a return on its investment. Although no ads currently appear on the photo-sharing site, Instagram's new COO Emily White expects the site to be ready to begin selling ads within a year.
* Google has submitted new proposals to address concerns by Europe's antitrust watchdog that the U.S. Internet giant is stifling competition, the European Commission said Monday.
* Microsoft is making its Xbox Music streaming service available for free on the Web -- even to those who don't use Windows 8. The expansion beyond Windows 8 devices and Xbox game consoles starting Monday is intended to bring new customers into the software giant's ecosystem of devices and services and could help it compete with other digital music offerings like Pandora, Spotify and iTunes.
* Sony's next-generation video game machine PlayStation 4 won't go on sale in Japan until next year, meaning that it won't be on time for the key year-end holiday or New Year's shopping season. Hiroshi Kawano, Sony Corp.'s chief of the game business in Japan and Asia, said Monday at a Tokyo event that the PlayStation 4 will go on sale Feb. 22, 2014, in Japan.
* Microsoft will be launching its next-generation Surface devices and peripherals on September 23 in New York City, according to an invitations Microsoft was sending out to the press Monday.
* Speaking of which, here's a News.com list of hardware the techies there can't wait to get their mitts on. Sadly, the Surface is not on it, though plenty of other Windows 8 tablets are.
* It's perhaps one of the most famous -- or infamous -- personnel moves in Silicon Valley history: then Apple CEO John Sculley's 1985 firing of Steve Jobs. But until now, we've never known much about how it happened. At a Forbes conference in Bali last week, however, Sculley opened up about the firing, telling some of the richest and most powerful people on Earth just how he came to deliver Jobs' pink slip.
