Matt Dery's Daily Update 2-17-11

Trouble for the Tigers and their star Miguel Cabrera, who was arrested late last night on suspicion of drunken driving and resisting arrest. Cabrera was booked in St. Lucie Florida after failing to follow police orders on the side of the road as the car he was allegedly driving had smoke coming from the engine. Police say the encountered a slurred speech Cabrera with his eyes all glassy. Cabrera shouted obscenities at the officer and had to be controlled by the cops with 3 to 4 knee spikes to the thigh. In addition, the police report says Cabrera was swigging scotch from a bottle in front of the officers and kept asking them if they knew who he was. The Tigers have yet to comment on the situation. The Tigers did not allow media into the clubhouse this morning. Carlos Guillen did tell the Detroit News that "this is not good for us". Last spring Cabrera told the media that he was a new man after his drunken incident in Birmingham in October of 2009. Position players scheduled to report to Lakeland for spring training on Saturday.

Ex Tiger Gary Sheffield tells the New York Post that he is now officially retired from baseball.

Red Wings skate into Tampa Bay tonight to face the most improved team in the NHL, the Lightning. One of the big reasons is their new GM, Red Wings great Steve Yzerman.
