Film Screening And Discussion At U Of M

Film and discussion about Tuskegee and Guatemala syphilis studies to be held in honor of MLK Day

Jan. 17, 2011 1:30 to 4 p.m.

In honor of the birth of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a screening will take place of the PBS/Nova documentary, "Deadly Deception," which tells the story of the 625 African-American men from Macon, Alabama, who for four decades were unwitting participants in a government study of untreated syphilis. Wellesley College medical historian Susan Reverby will lead a discussion titled "Does the History of Ethical Violations Matter?  What Can We Learn from Tuskegee and Guatemala?" following the screening, which is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the discussion.

MLK Day Breakfast in Redford

The Rev. Faith Fowler, senior pastor of Cass Community United Methodist Church and executive director of Cass Community Social Services since 1994, will be the featured speaker for the breakfast, which will be 7-9 a.m. in the gymnasium of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, 27201 West Chicago at Inkster Road.

The program will start at 7:15 a.m. and feature the Redford Union Madrigal Chorale and a pancake breakfast with sausage, eggs, hash browns and beverages. The cost is $8 per person with a donation of a personal care item and $60 for a table of eight with eight personal care items. All items will be donated to the Redford Interfaith Relief Food Pantry.

Tickets can be ordered by sending a check, made payable to Redford Township, to the township offices at 12121 Hemingway, Redford, MI 48239. The DEADLINE is Jan. 12.

MLK Day Ceremony In Westland

Mayor William R. Wild is pleased to announce that the City of Westland's annual MLK Ceremony will be held at the Westland Friendship Center, located at 1119 N. Newburgh between Ford and Marquette, on Monday, January 17 at 10:00 a.m. The public is invited to attend this free event and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

MLK Day Peace Walk In Southfield

The city of Southfield and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force will host the 26th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Peace Walk Celebration on Monday, January 17 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Hope United Methodist Church, 26275 Northwestern Highway.

MLK Day, Global Diversity In Livonia

Explore the richness of diversity - and perspectives on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. - from the viewpoints of people from four different continents during the 17th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration at 6:45 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2011, at Madonna University's Kresge Hall.

Symposium At The Henry Ford

To celebrate the spirit and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., The Henry Ford will hold its sixth annual With Liberty and Justice for All Symposium on January 17, 2011. This year's program features legal scholar and University of Michigan historian, Professor Martha S. Jones, followed by a dramatic reading by a Henry Ford Academy student and a panel discussion with high school students from around the metro area. Canton Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

As this year marks the 25th anniversary of the National Holiday celebrating the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Canton Community will host a special presentation of "Building Bridges: Canton Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill.

This year's event honoring Dr. King's legacy is scheduled to take place on Monday, January 17, 2011 starting with refreshments at 5:30 p.m. and the main stage presentation at 6:00 p.m.  The evening's program will be kicked off with a welcome from ReGina Coles-Shamberger and Darian Moore, both members of Canton's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Subcommittee and the Commission for Culture, Arts and Heritage.

DPD Promotes Violent Crime Victims Outreach

Scheduled for Monday, January 17, 2011 at 1pm at Triumph Church's East Campus on 2760 East Grand Boulevard in Detroit, We Shall Never Forget will not be exclusive to church members or any specific religious denomination. Instead, it will promote community awareness and outreach to violent crime victims and their survivors. Moreover, it will serve as a reminder to the community of the non-violence principles championed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"This will be an upbeat and positive event that will give the survivors resources while celebrating the lives of their loved ones."

Ed Gordon Speaks At MLK Celebration

Black Entertainment Television (BET) host, Emmy award-winning journalist and Detroit native Ed Gordon will be the keynote speaker at Henry Ford Hospital's annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Gordon is a veteran journalist recognized for insightful interviews and tackling tough topics. He has covered stories for CBS's "60 Minutes II" and NBC's "Today Show" and "Dateline." He now hosts "Weekly with Ed Gordon" on BET News.

Author Toni Yancey, M.D., MPH will also speak at the event. Yancey is a member of First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign. Yancey recently released "Instant Recess: How to Build a Fit Nation for the 21st Century."

The theme of this year's celebration is "One Dream, One Destination: The Pursuit of Happiness."

The event is free and open to the public.

MLK Rally and March

This year will mark the eighth annual MLK Day Rally & March in downtown Detroit on Monday, Jan. 17 at Noon. The event was established to reaffirm the peace and social justice legacy of the martyred civil rights leader who would have been 82-years-old. The theme for 2011 is "Community, Youth and the Struggle for Jobs, Peace and Economic Justice" and will enjoy the participation of many activists from throughout the metropolitan area.

City Year Detroit MLK Day of Service

Hundreds of volunteers will join City Year Detroit and United Way for Southeastern Michigan in projects that include painting murals to beautify schools, making blankets for the homeless, and creating greeting cards for military service people during the Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK), Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 17.
