Mark Hollis Sparks Tweetgate
By: Bob Wojnowski
College basketball may not stir as much passion around Detroit as the pro sports, but at least it's heating up. Michigan and Michigan State shared the Big Ten title, and both should have contending teams next year -- unless Michigan guard Trey Burke makes an inexplicably rash jump to the NBA. Spartans coach Tom Izzo also has to figure out if Keith Appling is the right point guard for his team.
But the Burke issue spawned the latest edition of Tweetgate, which I'll actually call Tweakgate. Because that's sort of what MSU AD Mark Hollis did, sending a relatively innocuous tweet to Burke offering advice on how to handle the tough decision. Michigan fans were miffed, understandably so, and U-M AD David Brandon talked to Hollis and then tweeted that the issue was resolved and wouldn't happen again.
Even if it's not a big deal -- and IT'S NOT -- it shouldn't happen again. Because no matter what Hollis' tweet intention was, it came off as a tweak attention. (See what I did there?) He said he regrets sending it, and he should. But anyone who makes a bigger issue of it is just playing the unnecessary tweak game.
And that's why Jamie and I will discuss it between 6 and 8 p.m. tonight!
