Mark Hackel Wins In Macomb County, Other Results
Macomb County voters elected Democratic Sheriff Mark Hackel as the county's first chief executive.
Hackel says he will seek funding for a regional airport and work on expanding Macomb Community College to offer four-year education and master's degree programs. He also plans to promote the county as a tourism and recreation destination, among other initiatives.
Most of the big-name incumbents who were challenged in the election appear to be remaining in the top spots in Wayne County.
County Executive Robert Ficano and Sheriff Benny Napoleon were both easily re-elected.
For the Michigan Supreme Court, incumbent Justice Robert Young and Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Mary Beth Kelly rode the Republican tide to victory.
Voters in Troy refused to approve a tax meant to keep the Troy Public Library open past July 1, 2011. The proposal lost by about 700 votes. This is the second time in less than a year that voters have rejected a tax hike for the library. City officials say it'll close next year unless a new funding source is found.
Two tax issues in Harper Woods passed, meaning the city's library and safety forces will avoid budget cuts.
Voters in Northville also supported a five-year mill increase for general operations.
Huron Township residents rejected a tax increase for fire operations and maintenance and for 911 dispatching.
