Many Southeast Michigan Workers Cross County Lines
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A report from the U.S. Census Bureau says lots of people in metro Detroit are crossing county lines to get to work -- and few are carpooling or using public transportation.
The figures, which were released Tuesday in the American Community Survey, are based on population estimates between 2006 and 2010.
According to the numbers, about 47 percent of the 560,000 people who work in Oakland County live in another county -- with 104,700 from Wayne County, 89,757 from Macomb County and 18,996 from Genesee County. That's a stark contrast to the 27 percent of workers nationwide who commute outside the county where they live.
In Wayne County, 227,054 workers reside somewhere else -- with 103,186 commuting from Oakland County, 56,177 from Macomb County and 20,478 from Washtenaw County.
In Macomb County, an estimated 100,916 workers, or 42 percent of the county's workforce, commute from elsewhere -- with 37,812 traveling from homes in Oakland County, 34,686 from Wayne County and 15,653 from St. Clair County.
about 171,000 Oakland County residents work elsewhere, with most of them heading to neighboring Wayne County.
According to the report, about 7.4 percent of the county's workers carpooled in 2011, below the national figure of 9.7 percent. Also, fewer than one percent used public transportation aside from taxicabs.
