DETROIT (WWJ) - Expect to see more 'Help Wanted' signs across Michigan. A new Manpower study finds that companies across the state are expected to hire at a steady pace over the next three months.
The latest Employment Outlook Survey shows that 19 percent of companies in Metro Detroit are looking to hire between October and December, while only 16 percent are looking to cut back. Another 63 percent expect to maintain their current workforce levels, while two percent are not certain of their hiring plans.
Statewide, 23 percent of firms want to increase staff, while 14 percent plan to make cuts to their workforces. Another 61 percent expect to maintain their current workforce levels, while two percent are not certain of their hiring plans.
The Net Employment Outlook is three percent in Metro Detroit, and nine percent statewide. The Net Employment Outlook is derived by taking the percentage of employers anticipating an increase in hiring activity and subtracting from this the percentage of employers expecting a decrease in hiring activity.
Manpower spokesperson Eric Jones said employers expect slightly softer employment prospects compared with one year ago.
According to the report, job prospects appear best in Durable Goods Manufacturing, Non-Durable Goods Manufacturing, Transportation/Utilities, Wholesale/Retail Trade, Professional/Business Services and Financial Activities.
Employers in Information, Education/Health Services and Government plan to reduce staffing levels, while hiring in Construction and Leisure/Hospitality is expected to remain unchanged.
