Man With Suspended License Charged In Drunken Crash That Killed Motorcyclist
MARINE CITY (WWJ) - A New Baltimore man who was driving on a suspended license is facing multiple charges in connection with a fatal crash over the weekend in St. Clair County.
James Gill, 40, was charged Tuesday in Marine City's 72nd District Court with operating while intoxicated causing death, driving while license suspended causing death, leaving the scene of a serious injury accident and operating while intoxicated, third offense.
The charges stem from a crash that killed 49-year-old Timothy Clore of Algonac. Police say Gill was behind the wheel around 4:30 p.m. Sunday when he crossed the centerline of Dixie Highway in Ira Township and slammed head-on into the motorcycle driven by Clore, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say Gill fled the accident scene and eventually ditched his damaged pickup truck before escaping to his home on Baltimore Street.
Witness statements led police to Gill's house a short time later where he was arrested without incident. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the crash before being transported to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office.
Police say Gill had been drinking.
Gill, who is currently in jail on a $500,000 bond, is due back in court on Aug. 22.
