3 Months Later, Suspect Gives Self Up In Bicyclist's Hit-And-Run Death
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A 25-year-old Ypsilanti Township man suspected in a deadly hit-and-run accident nearly three months ago has finally turned himself in to police.
Ahmed Abdullahi Mohamed was arraigned Friday in the 15th District Court on charges of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death, a 15-year felony, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, a 5-year felony.
According to police, Mohamed fled the scene after fatally striking Michael Curley, a 26-year-old Pittsfield Township resident, as he was riding his bike on Washtenaw Avenue near Brockman Boulevard around 2 a.m. on October 28.
Ann Arbor Police Lt. Robert Pfannes said investigators received no tips on the suspect's identity, and warrants for Mohamed were obtained after an extensive investigation.
"Car parts led to two potential years and model of vehicles which then led to an elimination process starting with the more logical locations. Once the suspect was identified, and the vehicle was located, there was much to do to on the tail end," Pfannes said via email. "Our crash re-constructionists had to complete that process, detectives sought to establish the suspect and victim's whereabouts and behavior leading up to the incident and verify or discredit information provided by all sources ... and a substantial amount of video from a variety of sources to review. "
For example, Pfannes said, forensic tests were done to determine if Curley's remains were present on Mohamed's vehicle.
Mohamed's next court date wasn't immediately released.
