Man Struck, Killed While Riding Motorized Scooter Across Road In Madison Heights

WARREN (WWJ) - It was a disturbing scene Monday morning as man on a motorized scooter was hit and killed while crossing a busy road in Madison Heights.

Around 6 a.m., police say 59-year-old Warren Earl Johnson was attempting to cross Dequindre Road, just north of 11 Mile, when he was struck by a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica.

The victim's wheelchair was "literally in pieces," reported WWJ's Charlie Langton from the scene.

Johnson was taken to St. John Oakland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Johnson, who'd recently suffered a leg injury, had borrowed the scooter from a friend. The vehicle had no lights or reflectors, police noted.

Johnson was a Detroit resident, police said, but spent a lot of time at a friend's residence in Madison Heights.

Police have questioned the driver of the car, identified as a 24-year-old Sterling Heights man. They say he is cooperating with authorities.

No charges have been filed as an investigation continues.

The roadway was closed for several hours following the incident but has since reopened.
