Man Shot After Pointing Gun At Detroit Police

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit police shot and wounded a man who they say pointed a gun at officers during a foot chase on the city's east side.

Police said in a statement that the 22-year-old man was listed in temporary serious condition after being shot during a pursuit that began Tuesday night in the area of Haverhill and Beaconsfield.

Police said the uniformed officers were on patrol in a marked squad car when they saw three males walking. When the officers approached them, they say the males ran in different directions. Officers were pursing one of them when he dropped a weapon.

Police say the man picked up the gun and pointed it at officers, and the officers fired at him.

The Detroit News reported that the suspect's weapon was recovered. His name was not immediately released.

No officers were injured and the shooting is under investigation by the Detroit Police Department's internal affairs department.
