Man Sentenced To 15 Years In Fire That Killed Brother
MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) — A young man has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison in connection with a fire that that killed his 17-year-old brother in the family's suburban Detroit home.
Mark Marroki learned his punishment Wednesday in a Macomb County courtroom after earlier pleading no contest to second-degree murder in the case. He originally faced a first-degree murder charge . A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing purposes.
Marroki told the court he's "deeply sorry for what happened" and called it "the worst choice I've ever made."
The April 28, 2017, fire trapped Matthew Marroki-Yaldo in an upstairs bedroom. Other family members made it safely from the burning home. Prosecutors say the fire was started after a dispute.
