Man Sentenced In Drunken Driving Crash That Killed 2 Children
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A metro Detroit man has been sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison for the drunken driving deaths of an 8-year-old girl and her 2-year-old brother.
David Lamberson, a 63-year-old resident of Macomb County's Shelby Township, was sentenced Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court. He earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in connection with the Jan. 8, 2012 crash that killed Alana Lee and Lavale Harvey, Jr.
Lamberson choked up as he apologized to the children's parents in court.
"The emotional pain is horrendous. I will never get past this. I'm in jail already. I'm trapped in a body that no longer services me. I live in a vessel of pain. I was in a coma for two months. When I awoke and heard what happened I just wanted to crawl back into my coma and die," Lanberson said.
Police say Lamberson was speeding when he swerved to avoid a car backing out of a residential driveway, crossed the center lane on Hoover Street, just north of 7 Mile Road, and crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by the children's mother. Harvey was killed instantly, while Lee was taken to the hospital where she later died.
Investigators say Lamberson's blood alcohol level two times the legal limit of .08 at the time of the crash. He originally was charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
