Man Sentenced In Connection With Murder Of U-M Medical Student, Offers Apology To Victim's Family
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A convicted murderer issues an apology to his victim's family in court Wednesday.
Twenty-two-year-old Shaquille Jones apologized to the family of Paul DeWolf, the 25-year-old University of Michigan medical student and Portage native, who was shot and killed in 2013 during an armed robbery at the fraternity where he lived.
Kris and Tom DeWolf, the victim's parents, were in the Ann Arbor courtroom when the sentence was handed down.
"He is very remorseful and we all are," said Kris DeWolf.
"He wishes he could go back, like we all wish we could, and reverse the events of that day," said Tom DeWolf.
Paul DeWolf was found dead in his apartment in July 2013. The 25-year-old was shot to death during a break-in at his off-campus fraternity house. Three men were charged in the slaying.
DeWolf, a 2010 graduate of Grand Valley State University, was to graduate from the medical school in spring of 2014.
He was recognized during commencement ceremonies in Ann Arbor in May of 2014.
DeWolf also was recognized Friday as the John Patrick Niland Award winner.
Shaquille Jones was sentenced to 25-to-50 years in prison for his involvement in the murder.
The trial of another defendant in the case, 21-year-old Joei Jordan, is now underway; while a third defendant, 22-year-old Dajeon Franklin, was convicted by a jury last year and is imprisoned.
