Man Pushing Disabled Vehicle Hit By Suspected Drunk Driver On I-696
WARREN (WWJ) - Police say a 27-year-old Grosse Pointe Park man was critically injured when he was struck by a suspected drunk driver on I-696.
The accident happened just before 3:20 a.m. Saturday on eastbound I-696 near Van Dyke in Warren.
According to Michigan State Police, a 2002 Ford Focus was left disabled and blocking the roadway after it was involved in a minor traffic crash with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van.
After the collision, the occupants of the Ford Focus exited the vehicle in an attempt to push it from the roadway. A Chevy Cobalt then struck the Ford Focus, police said.
One of the subjects attempting to push the Ford Focus, the Grosse Pointe Park man, was struck and thrown down the roadway. He was rushed to St. John Hospital with critical injuries.
Two female occupants of the Chevy Cobalt were also injured, and transported to Royal Oak Beaumont hospital.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, but say alcohol appears to be a factor in the second crash.
Eastbound I-696 was closed for several hours after the crash, but has since reopened.
