Man Gets Life Without Parole In Slaying Of Detroit 300 Volunteer
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - One of two men convicted in the fatal shooting of an anti-crime advocate and Detroit nightclub bouncer will spend the rest of his life in prison.
The Detroit News reported that Carl Bruner was sentenced Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Co-defendant Michael Lawson will be sentenced at a later date.
Jackson, a married father of six, was a well-known member of the volunteer crime prevention and community patrol group Detroit 300.
Police Chief Ralph Godbee called the killing "a sad irony."
A jury found Bruner and Lawson guilty of first-degree murder last month in the killing 39-year-old Marcel Jackson at Club Pandemonium on East Congress in Detroit in June 2012.
Jackson had kicked a man out of the club for hitting a woman before the June 2012 shooting. The man returned with an accomplice and shot Jackson in the back.
The pair was arrested after a two-year investigation. It's unclear who did the shooting.
