Man Gets 8 Years In Christmas Morning Wrong-Way Crash
TOLEDO, Ohio (WWJ/AP) - A southeast Michigan man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a wrong-way crash in Ohio that killed a Toledo man returning home from Midnight Mass.
The crash, on southbound I-75 near mile marker 209 in north Toledo, happened in the early hours of Christmas morning last year, killing 26-year-old Juan Garcia Jr.
Accused of reckless and drunken driving, 42-year-old Adam Tunison of LaSalle, Mich. pleaded no contest this month to aggravated vehicular homicide.
According to the Toledo Blade, Tunison was seen on surveillance video downing at least eight mixed drinks and nine shots of liquor at a West Toledo bar before getting into his SUV that night.
Prosecutors said Tunison crashed head-on into Garcia's car and that his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit in Ohio.
A judge on Tuesday handed down the maximum sentence.
