Man Gets 5-10 Years For Shooting Highland Park Mayor
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ/AP) - A 25-year-old man who shot and wounded the mayor of Highland Park has been sentenced to five to 10 years in prison.
Jair Harris, of Eastpointe, was sentenced Friday in Wayne County Circuit Court after pleading guilty last month to assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
DeAndre Windom was shot in the leg at the Key Club near downtown Detroit shortly before 2 a.m. on Nov. 17. Police said another group, not connected to Windom, got into an altercation that quickly escalated into a shooting.
No one else was injured. Windom has since made a full recovery.
In exchange for Harris' plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of carrying a weapon with unlawful intent, firearm possession by a felon and careless discharge causing injury.
According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Harris was paroled shortly before the shooting on Oct. 1 after serving part of a one to five year prison sentence on firearm charges. Prior to that offense, Harris spent time in prison on marijuana deliver charges.
