Man Gets 25 To 50 Years For Torture Of Girlfriend's Teen
ESCANABA (WWJ/AP) - An Upper Peninsula man who pleaded guilty to abusing his girlfriend's teenage son has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison.
The man was sentenced Monday in Delta County Circuit Court. Last week, the 15-year-old's mother was sentenced to 20 years to 50 years in prison.
Both pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse. The mother's boyfriend pleaded no contest to aiding and abetting first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Police say the boy rarely left a room made from tarps while being tortured and abused at his mother's Escanaba home.
"There was a large room, like an attic, and a smaller room using tarps that were stapled to the walls and floor," Escanaba police Capt. Jamie Segorski previously said. "The only source of heat was a space heater. He was allowed on the stairs to eat."
The boy was rescued from the Escanaba home in April after a worried relative who hadn't seen him in a long time called police.
A no-contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated that way for sentencing purposes.
Names of those involved are being withheld to protect the boy's identity.
