Man Gassing Up Friend's Truck On Side Of Freeway Killed By Semi
NORTHFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say a 37-year-old Whitmore Lake man who was putting gas in his friend's disabled vehicle on the side of a local freeway was hit and killed by a passing semi-truck.
The accident happened just before 10 a.m. Wednesday on southbound US-23 near 6 Mile Road in Northfield Township.
According to police, Jason Bell was driving with his friend Joseph Michael Logan when his F-150 apparently ran out of gas, so he pulled over on the side of the road. After filling up a gas can, Bell jumped back into the driver's seat while Logan went to put the gas in the truck.
As Logan was filing up the tank, police say a semi-truck veered over to the shoulder, striking Logan and the F-150.
Logan was declared dead at the scene. Bell was transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries, in stable condition.
It wasn't immediately clear what caused the semi-truck to cross onto the shoulder. The driver, who was interviewed by police on the scene, was not injured in the collision.
The freeway was closed for several hours while police investigated but has since reopened.
An investigation is ongoing.
