Drive-By Shooter At Large After Killing Man On West Side; Was It Revenge?
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are searching for the gunman who fired multiple shots into a west side Detroit home, killing a 24-year-old man who was set to testify in an armed robbery trial.
The shooting took place around 2:30 a.m. Thursday on Roselawn Street at the corner of Norfolk Street, in a neighborhood near 8 Mile Road and Wyoming Avenue.
A 24-year-old man was in a back bedroom when he was fatally struck by at least one bullet that was fired from outside the home. Police say the suspect was in a vehicle that sped away from the scene after the shooting. No one else was injured.
"It appears that this particular incident is a drive-by shooting," Sgt. Michael Woody said. "Our homicide investigators are on the case right now. This is a very active and fluid investigation."
Detroit Police Chief James Craig says the victim was a witness in an upcoming armed robbery trial.
According to a source talking to WWJ's Mike Campbell, that armed robbery occurred at the victim's house last month. On Wednesday afternoon, the victim allegedly turned down "hush money" to not testify in the case, the source said. Hours later, the shooting occurred.
The man's name has not yet been released.
A description of the suspect was not immediately available. An investigation is ongoing.
Craig has been working hard to change the "no snitch" culture in the city.
"People didn't have a lot of confidence talking to the police, because they thought they would be identified by the individuals responsible for the crime," said Craig. "Today though, we find that people have a sense of security knowing that they can talk to us."
