Man Fatally Shot At Bus Stop Along Woodward Avenue

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Police are investigating after a man was gunned down at a bus stop in Highland Park.

The shooting took place around 5 a.m. Wednesday along Woodward Avenue near Tennyson Street, between the Davison Freeway and Chicago Boulevard.

The man was standing with "a number of people" at the bus stop when a car drove by and someone inside the vehicle opened fire, police said. Other circumstances leading up to the incident weren't immediately clear.

After the man was shot, he staggered to the parking lot of a nearby fish restaurant where he collapsed and died.

No arrests have been made and police have not yet released information on any possible suspects. Police Chief Kevin Coney is hoping someone in the community will speak up and turn in the gunman.

"It's very important because it's somebody around here shooting at people and we need to know and get the facts together so we can apprehend the person or persons that did it," Coney told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

The victim is said to be a white man in his 50s. He has not yet been identified.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who might have been at the bus stop or who has any other information is urged to contact police at 313-852-7338.

Northbound Woodward was closed for more than an hour as police investigated the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
