Man Falls Through Thin Ice Chasing Dogs
MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - While many Michiganders are enjoying the warmer weather, it's weakening ice patches around the area, making walking on ice even more unsafe than usual.
A Macomb County man learned that the hard way Tuesday when his dogs ended up on a thin sheet of ice. The man went after them and fell into some frigid water.
Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said it happened 23 mile near North Avenue in Macomb Township on a branch of the Clinton River.
"Our deputies responded and were able to use life rings and throw it out to him and pull him in. And then we were able to get the dogs off the ice also," Wickersham said, adding a warning to area residents.
"That ice is not safe enough to be walking on. So, even if your animals are out there, give us a call ... We have the proper equipment and we'll be able to get them off," he said.
The man is being treated for hypothermia at a local hospital and is expected to be OK. The dogs were not injured.
Temperatures spiked up into the upper 50s Tuesday afternoon -- not quiet expected to reach the day's record high of 60 degrees, set in 1989. Forecasters say it will cool down to 36 over night, with a chance of rain.
High temps Wednesday and Thursday were expected to be in the 40s, dropping back down into the 30s Friday and into the weekend. There likely won't be any more snow, at least until Sunday.
