Man Ejected From Vehicle In Deadly Crash On I-94
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police think a man who was ejected from his car on I-94 was speeding before the deadly crash.
The accident happened in the early morning hours Thursday on westbound I-94, near the Chatsworth Road pedestrian overpass in Detroit.
Michigan State Trooper Jay Morningstar said they initially received a report of shots fired in the area, but quickly determined that was not the case.
"The injuries to his head were very severe, but once the body was moved around and we had some medical experts look at it, it was determined that it was actually not a shooting, it just was a very gruesome scene," he said.
Morningstar said the driver was ejected after his vehicle went up an embankment, hit a light pole and rolled over. He said the man was effectively stripped of his clothes.
"Any time you're in a crash, your body and everything with it is going the same rate of speed as your vehicle was. Once that body is ejected, it starts to hit pavement and other inanimate objects, the clothing comes off because of the high rate of speed," he said.
Morningstar believes the man was driving over the speed limit at the time of the crash.
"We're encouraging people to take serious note of this and slow down their speeds. Understand this is why we enforce the speed limits on these roadways," he said.
The man's identity was not released.
Westbound I-94 was closed at Cadieux for several hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.
