Man Dies After Golf Cart Flips Over
OXFORD (WWJ) - Police say a 43-year-old man is dead after flipping his golf cart while playing in a league at the Copper Hills Golf Course in Oxford.
Eric Ostdiek, of Troy, was driving a 2007 Club Car golf cart on the course Thursday just after 7 p.m. with a 41-year-old Macomb Township resident in the passenger seat.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, Ostdiek drove through the tee box and started down a hill to retrieve an errant ball. He saw a steep drop off ahead and attempted to turn the wheel sharply. The cart rolled over and landed on top of Ostdiek, severely injuring himself and the passenger.
Both men were transported to Crittenton Hospital. Ostdiek was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. The other man's condition is unknown.
Ostdiek was the boys' golf coach at Southfield Lathrup High School. He had been an employee with the district for 14 years.
Investigators say Ostdiek was driving the cart too fast. It is unknown at this time if alcohol was involved in the crash, which remains under investigation.
