Man Dies After Crashing Into Building In Trenton

TRENTON (WWJ) -Police in Trenton say a man was killed after his car slammed into a building on Fort Street.

The accident happened early Wednesday morning just north of West Road, where the man apparently lost control of his car and crashed into Debacker's Lawn Care shop.

WWJ's Vickie Thomas talked with owner Tim Debacker, whose house sits on the three-acre plot. He said this not the first time a car -- going too fast -- has landed on his property.

"I was asleep and heard a big bang and it woke me up at 1:20 this morning. And then the Trenton Police came and got me and said a car hit the building, so I came out and saw the disaster. It was only just removed around five o'clock," he said.

Debacker said the building was so damaged, he might just have to tear it down.

"Just the back-end was sticking out of the wall, that was it, so he hit her pretty hard. Most of the car was in the building... They (the police) said 90 or 100 miles per hour, it was some kind of persuit but he was flying through here," said Debacker.

Trenton Police declined to comment about the alleged chase and were only able to confirm a white male was the victim, citing an ongoing investigation. His identity was not immediately released.

Tipsters are telling WWJ that there was an armed robbery at a nearby gas station shortly before the crash. Police aren't saying whether the two incidents are related.

Fort Street was closed for several hours while investigators tried to determine what led the man to lose control of his vehicle.
