Man Dies After Being Hit By Alleged Drunk Driver On I-75
DETROIT (WWJ) - Another fatality to report following a deadly crash Sunday morning on I-75.
The accident happened around 3 a.m., when 25-year-old Nadeem Sawaf lost control of his Honda on I-75 near McNichols and hit the median wall. Shortly after, a 35-year-old man driving an SUV slammed into the disabled vehicle. Sawaf was killed in the crash.
Despite Michigan State Police reporting 25-year-old Kush Sood, one of Sawaf's passengers, had non-life threatening injuries, friends tell WWJ Newsradio 950 the promising nursing student died as a result of the crash.
Sood's former girlfriend, Kelly Whiteside, said Sood was killed by an apparent drunk driver, while attempting to do the right thing.
"Kush got out of the car to check the car and to try to move the car back all the way over to the side of the expressway and as soon as he got back into the car, a drunk driver had hit the car," she said.
Whiteside said Sood was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
"The ambulance took Kush, doing CPR, took him to the hospital and that morning he later passed away," she said.
Whiteside said Sood wasn't a drinker, and she was upset over recent media coverage loosely associating alcohol with the nursing student.
"It's just terrible because everyone knew that he was not that person to drink and drive at all, and when we were told that we were just completely shocked and were thinking 'No, that's not his personality at all.' He's just a smart guy, like, he knew how to take over a situation," she said.
The accident remains under investigation.
