Man Convicted Of Attempted Murder, Cuts Tether, Now On The Run
DETROIT (AP) - Authorities say a man convicted of attempted murder in Detroit is on the run after cutting an electronic tether off his ankle.
The attorney the man who skipped town says the man should come home.
The Free Press reports that lawyer Sterling Coleman says his client Demetrous Magwood should turn himself in, saying he knows he's innocent, but still has to come to court.
The monitoring device was found on May 7, four days after Magwood was convicted of shooting a man on a street. Wayne County Judge Edward Ewell had allowed him to remain free on bond until his sentencing but ordered him to wear an electronic tether.
In a court filing this week, the FBI says it is assisting in the hunt for Magwood, who may be in Alabama.
The Detroit Free Press says the Wayne County prosecutor's office objected to releasing Magwood on bond after his conviction.
