Man Charged With Shooting At Cars Faces Prison
PITTSFIELD TWP. (WWJ/AP) - The man who allegedly fired shots at motorists along US-23 near Ann Arbor last winter is expected to face at least seven years in prison under a plea deal.
Elmore Ray pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges including assault with intent to murder, possession of a short-barreled shotgun, possession of a weapon with unlawful intent, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The 28-year-old is due back in court Nov. 21 for sentencing.
As part of Ray's plea deal, additional counts of assault with intent to murder and four counts of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm were dropped.
Police in Washtenaw County's Pittsfield Township responded Feb. 27 to a wooded area near US-23 after a 911 caller reported that a man dressed in a black trench coat was standing near a bridge and shooting at traffic.
Police say they spotted Ray walking nearby and took him into custody. They tracked his footprints in the snow and found a sawed-off shotgun about 150 feet away from where he was arrested.
No injuries were reported, and police say no vehicles were struck.
