Man Charged In Theft Of Secret Service U-Haul Truck

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A man has been charged in the theft of a Secret Service rental truck that was carrying equipment for Vice President Joe Biden's Labor Day visit to Detroit.

Forty-five-year-old Charles Rumbley of Detroit is charged in a federal criminal complaint with theft of government property, a  10-year felony. He was ordered held Thursday pending a Nov. 9 hearing.

Investigators say the U-Haul truck stolen early Sept. 2 outside the Westin Book Cadillac hotel was found the next day in an apartment parking lot near Henry Ford Hospital about three miles away.

Authorities say the truck contained $150,000 worth of metal detectors for use at the event. The Secret Service has said no weapons were on board.

Rumbley was identified as the suspect after investigators reviewed security camera footage that showed a male in a lime-green shirt breaking into the truck and driving away, according to reports.

Rumbley has a lengthy criminal record dating to 1985, including arrests for assault, assault with intent to murder, arson, larceny, burglary, weapons  offenses and auto theft, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.
