Man Breaks Down In Sobs When Charged In Rape, Robbery Of Elderly Woman
CLINTON TWP. (WWJ/AP) - A convicted burglar has been charged in the rape and robbery of an 80-year-old woman in her apartment at a senior citizens complex in suburban Detroit.
The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports 29-year-old William Porter Harrison III of Sterling Heights choked back tears as he was arraigned Monday in 41B District Court. Bond was set at $1 million, and Harrison could face life in prison.
In court, Harrison broke down in tears and apologized to the judge, saying: "I don't know what I was thinking."
Harrison was arrested last week. Police said they recovered $3,000 worth of jewelry that belongs to the woman.
According to investigators, Harrison entered an unlocked apartment at Heritage Estates complex at 18 Mile and Hayes roads on September 13. Police say the woman had been sleeping in bed when Harrison made her open a safe and empty its contents, which included jewelry, a small amount of cash, a computer and prescription pills. He then led the victim back to her bedroom, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Harrison was on probation at the time of his arrest. He has been charged with home invasion, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, armed robbery and probation violation. A preliminary exam has been scheduled for October 17.
