Man Arrested In Fatal Hit-And-Run After 2 Days Of Surveillance
GARDEN CITY (WWJ) - A man who police say was involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Garden City has been taken into custody.
Police say they arrested a 39-year-old Westland man after two days of surveillance. He was taken into custody on I-96 near Beech Daly Road around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The suspect, whose name is not being released pending his arraignment, is described by police as a family man with three children and an expecting wife. He has no prior criminal record and has a valid driver's license, according to police.
The man was not driving the vehicle involved in the hit and run accident at the time of his arrest, but police did find a car matching the suspect description stashed in his garage.
Police believe the man is one of as many as three drivers who struck 52-year-old George Punga Monday night along Ford Road near Middlebelt Road and then fled the scene. Punga was walking to a grocery store when he was first hit by one vehicle and forced into oncoming traffic, where he was hit again.
Punga was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital where he later died.
The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 734-793-1700.
