UPDATE: Sex Offender Arrested For Snatching Purse At Kohl's, Threatening To Shoot
CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - An arrest has been made in connection with a robbery that occurred in the parking lot of a Kohl's department store in Chesterfield Township last Thursday.
Marvin Lee Hopkins, 62, of Chesterfield Township, was arraigned Wednesday afternoon at 42-2 District Court on one count of armed robbery, a life felony. Hopkins was given a $75,000 cash surety bond and is currently lodged at the Macomb County Jail pending an October 10th pretrial date.
How was he caught? Investigators said a tip led them to identifying the people who returned to stolen purse to the victim. These individuals in turn led investigators to identifying and charging Hopkins with the robbery.
Hopkins is a registered sex offender and living at the Chesterfield Motor Lodge, 50900 Gratiot Avenue, at the time of this incident.
A 55-year-old woman told police she left the store on Gratiot, just south of 23 Mile Road, around 12:25 p.m. and was walking back to her car when a man grabbed her arm and threatened to "kill" her if she didn't give him her purse and added that he would "shoot her if she screamed."
The woman turned over her purse and the suspect fled westbound on foot toward the "K-Mart" parking lot. Multiple Chesterfield Patrol and Detective units immediately converged on the area, but were unable to locate the fleeing suspect.
Later that same evening, the woman said she received an unexpected knock on at her door. She told police was greeted by white male and white female who turned her purse back over to her, stating that they found it abandoned and simply brought it back to the address they found on the I.D. inside.
The woman was uninjured.
