Man Arrested For Trying To Smuggle Marijuana Into U.S.
MARINE CITY (WWJ) - U.S. Border Patrol Agents say they seized 33.72 lbs of marijuana and arrested an individual attempting to smuggle the narcotics into the country.
Agents say during the early morning hours Friday, their remote video surveillance system on the St. Clair River detected a boat coming from Canada, entering US waters, and landing near the Port Seaway Inn in Cottrellville Township.
The boat stayed in the US for a brief period of time and then quickly left. Responding agents noticed a van driving away from the area at a high rate of speed shortly after the boat left for Canada.
Agents pulled the vehicle over and during a search, found a large duffel bag full of several clear packages of what appeared to be marijuana. The contents of the bag tested positive for marijuana and the driver of the van was placed under arrest.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was turned over to the St. Clair County Sheriffs Department.
Anyone with information on this incident or who wants to report suspicious activity, is asked to contact the Detroit Sector Border Patrol at 800-537-3220.
