Man Arrested After Dollar Store Robbery, Police Chase
DETROIT (WWJ) - An Oak Park man is waking up in jail Tuesday morning after an attempted robbery at a dollar store led to a police chase through Detroit.
Police say a man in his mid-30's went into a store at 9 Mile Road and Scotia in Oak Park, acting as if he was going to make a purchase. While he was in the checkout line, police say the man reached into the open cash register, grabbed a handful of cash and fled the store in a pickup truck.
As the man sped through the parking lot, another customer called police and gave them a description of the truck and the driver. Police caught up with the suspect and tried to stop him near 8 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway, but the chase continued for another two miles.
The man led police through Detroit neighborhoods before he ran a red light at Schafer Highway and McNichols Road and slammed into another car. Detroit EMS took the driver of that vehicle to a local hospital with minor injuries.
After the collision, the man tried to make a break for it on foot, but police quickly caught up with him. The suspect, who was not identified, was handcuffed and taken to the Oak Park Police Station.
Police say the case will be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.
